hi all
i've been in the same career for four years and am not sure if it where id like to be any more, i have a degree in graphic design, and think id like to try something new, no idea what!!! and was just wondering what educational or even other fields i could branch into without having to spend four or five years as a student. i know this is a wide open ask, but if any of u might have gone through something similar u may be able to send me in some direction.
cheers:)

Re: what options available?

I think you need to give a bit more information in order to get a meaningful response.

sorry, i know it sounds too broad an ask, really i just wanna know who or where i can find out what my next step is, career guidance, recruitment agencies? i know i should have some idea what i mite like to do, i have read up on lots of different jobs but nothing is making me stick!

Surely the first step is to decide for sure that you actually want to change career? In your first post you say that you are not sure.

I suppose you mean, something you can apply existing skills to but in a different arena. There are several that fall under a communications degree, but it is very varied and you haven't been very specific. For example if you are very computer savvy, which some designers are, you could look at the IT industry in a technical support position (particularly for mac computers) or if you are involved in web design, then a programming course as a web developer or otherwise might suit you.

If you are good at photography, then develop this, it's a completely different take on what you are doing now. Also there is now an influx of new sites where you can sell independent work (photography or say if you are a good computer illustrator) such as www.istock.com. Or you can sell imaging to the likes of getty images etc. which gets you out of the design industry and into illustration.

If you are good at copywriting this can also be developed, some people who acquire a degree in communications (which is what a graphics degree is worded as these days) can get into copywriting and journalism.

Marketing is an option, as marketing courses involve design knowledge and you would have a head start.

I suppose you need to say what your strengths are before anything else can be said. Do you want a complete change but with some value of knowledge from your degree. Are you artistic or logical? You need to say more.

thanks loads for coming back to me on this, i know only i can narrow down and deside where i wanna go, have been scratchin my head for months now,
even thought about going into teaching!!!! with my sense of direction and decision making god help the poor kids. back to the drawing board me thinks
cheers
