hi could you please tell me what is included in a car warranty? I bought a VW Passat 1.9tdi in August last year. Since we have the car the timing belt and parts related to this area had to be replaced amounting to over €800.00. We were told that this was not covered by the warranty. Also today the turbo has ceased, we were told that this is not covered either. The garage is a member of SIMI. Being a woman I have no knowledge when it comes to cars! i would like to get some idea of what is covered by a warranty as it will be Monday before I can contact the SIMI.

Thanks

A second hand so... That really depends on what your SIMI form (sales agreement) says on the purchase page below the cost section, you should have a green copy. This part is filled out in hand writing. Good dealers would always give one year warranty on a second hand. However if it needs a timing belt then you probably bought a car with 60,000+ miles off a smaller dealer. These types normally give a 3 month engine and gear-box warranty. Simi are a pretty good resource. If you are unhappy contact them, see www.simi.ie. " Membership of the Society requires companies to operate to high standards of business ethics and integrity. Motorists should look for the SIMI logo as a symbol of reassurance"

Under the cost section in the green part of the form it says 12 months or 12000 miles. I have only done 10000 miles. It does not state anywhere on the form what is included in the warranty. I have done loads of searches on google to see what is included in any warranty- can't find anything.

There is no such thing as a standard warranty.

You might get "bumper to bumper" on a nearly new low miles car, all the way down to 1 month engine and gearbox, or possibly none at all.

Timing belts, turbos, clutch, tyres, brakes and suspension are all service parts generally.

You should have asked at the time of purchase was any major work due on the engine. Timing belts lives vary car to car, and the dealer is obliged to tell you. Purchase more carefully next time out.

I got a flat replaced under warranty on a 2nd hand 00 car. I was very impressed

You were rather lucky, but fair play.
