We live on a hill with a fairly healthy stream alongside. In days of old this was where the locals got their water. When we got back yesterday, our well stopping giving us water. It's old, but I don't know how old, it does sometimes run dry but only have two years history to go on. On those occassions, it filled up again within a couple of hours.
The pump is above ground and we do know that it will not work in extreme weather above 25 degrees, yesterday it was 26 plus. We thought it would come back overnight when the temperature dropped but no, nothing. My Bubbly had to go down the hill to get a bucket of water this morning.
I'm concerned that the stream still has water but we don't. When I say stream I mean it's almost as if a pipe got cut, or a tap pulled off. Small but provided water for the families here..and still is.
the pump first... and then is your well sunk deep enough is another area to look at. Although it was warm and dry for the past few days we had a lot of rain the a week or two before that and it should take good few weeks of good weather before poeple have to worry about wells running dry if they are sunk properly.
Haven't got around to that yet, just in from work and contemplating my first trip to a laundrette in years! I'll give them a shout though, one neighbour used to mind our house for the previous owner and knows a bit about the systems here (he always restarts my central heating for me )
Since posting this however, my other half has informed me that when he got back from our two day camping trip, he found the hose on and the drive soaked. He reckons a child left it on before we went.
He's going to check the pump tonight but general opinion from friends is we'll need to drill again
Okay, I went and checked the pump myself, found a little black button that said "circuit breaker, reset" so figured I couldn't do any more harm. Pressed that and was rewarded by the sound of water gurgling through the pipes.
I can only guess that the hose being left on trigger it to switch itself off.
Will close the thread now and let it drift into some archive and save my blushes.
(was fun calling Mr Bubbly and telling him I fixed it though)
