We recently moved into a house where the ESB meter seal is broken. This was only seen a few weeks after moving in as we were getting quotes for electrical work and some of the guys pointed it out.
Now it looks like one of them has reported the broken seal to the ESB who want to come out to take a look at it.
Has anybody been through this before - is there a fixed price to get it fixed? Should we be thinking of chasing the previous owner for this cost or is it tough luck.
What surprises me is that it looks like the seal has been broken for ages but how would the previous owner have gotten away with it if the meter was being read regularly?
The ESB are interested in "illegal extraction" or in normal English, fiddling the meter.
If you have only moved in recently then you should be ok.
They never used to charge for this sort of call-out, but in this brave new world where we are all being "served " by ESB Networks don't bet on not having to pay something.
You'll also usually get a lecture from the guy who comes out and they'll hang abotu 4 or 5 of those warning cards about not breaking seals all over your box.
