What happens at the end of a Haven mortgage?

Apologies if this has been asked regularly!

Thanks to good fortune, I am going to finish paying my mortgage with Haven early in the next few months. When I call to enquire about my balance, they can only give me the outstanding amount to the nearest €1,000 so I am not exactly sure when the last payment will be.

What happens? Does Haven write to me to say it is close to being paid, or after it has been paid in full? What happens if my last payment is more than the outstanding amount?

Haven are pretty hopeless at their communications, so any guidance on your experiences of what to expect would be very gratefully received.

I would keep an eye on it yourself, if you pay more than outstanding it will be refunded but I wouldn't depend on them to write to you certainly not before it's repaid. You might be contacted afterwards but just follow up yourself to be on safe side.

Thanks - by my rough calculation, the last payment should be September, so I'll ask for a more detailed timetable in June or July so I know where I am. At that stage, I might be able to make one final lump sum payment and close it.

Which will be nice!

That seems very odd. Isn't it possible to get clearer information from them? E.g. the actual current outstanding balance and the remaining repayment schedule?

I am sure they can give this specifics in writing, but over the phone they will only give the outstanding amount to the nearest €1,000 - which is fine for a general indicator of how the mortgage is progressing but not much use when that amount is small.

I think my approach will be to make a lump sum payment in the next couple of months, and ask for the actual amount left and the schedule of payments.

It'd be so much easier if they had an online facility to see this information in real time.
