What does a house survey entail?

Hi,

There was a great thread on here a while back about not assuming your surveyor will check everthing in a house and it gave a great list of what you should ensure they should check.
BUT I can't seem to find it.

What are the main things they look at ?
I suspect the house may have a problem with damp.
Is there anything else I should request they look for?

THanks

Who is actually doing the "survey" is probably more important.

If you are concerned about something in particular, you should really talk to an engineer (or at least a well regarded and experienced builder) and basically ask him what kind of things he would normally check.

A so called "survey" can be anything performed by almost anyone. I've heard of people paying a couple of hundred euro basically for the "surveyor" to confirm the no. of rooms and the approx. size of the house.
I say "surveyor" because many people purporting to offer a comprehensive service are not qualified to do so, or at least mislead as to the quality/level of the service.

Note that no matter who looks at your house they will have plenty of disclaimers absolving them of any liability should a problem surface.

The following might be of some use...

I used Pat McGovern & Associates and was very happy with them - I went for the full structural survey at Eur484 and got a very detailed report.
