When you are speaking or writing to your TD or Senator, this is what you should ask them to do:

1) Attend the Oireachtas Finance Committee meetings when the banks and the Central Bank are there and ask them questions about the SVR
2) Put pressure on the Minister for Finance to do something about the high rates
  • Review the legislation to give the Central Bank the power to control rates
  • Not to introduce a bank levy
3) Put pressure on the Governor of the Central Bank
  • to discuss the rates with the banks
  • to clarify why he says that the rates are not egregious
  • to explain why the rates are so high in Ireland
  • to stop including tracker rates in the new mortgages data
  • make sure to fast track any application from new entrants to the market
  • review whether the special rates for new customers is in breach of the Consumer Protection Code obligation to treat customers fairly
4) Call in the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to explain their inaction
5) Investigate changes in the legislation to control excessive interest rates
6) Oppose any change in the bank levy - it will just be passed on
