They are a bit of wood or metal that goes on the ground under the door. They are normally used to cover the gap between 2 different floor types. eg a wooden floor and tiles?

Its just a strip of wood or metal but i can't think what they are called them.

reason I remember is that as a young lad i cut of a pile of them that I found in the shed to make wooden boats.

father was less than happy --- much less

Usually they are called doorplates / dividers and can be metal or wood. The traditional saddle board may also be what you are thinking which is basically a wooden saddle such as you see in doorways.

If ur looking for the metal strip we got one in carpet shop for few euro, they come in long enough lengths.

AFAIK saddles were to make a seal between the door and the ground when closed i.e. the door had to be "short" of the floor to swing open but you didn't want it "short" of the floor when closed...
If you are looking for something to cover the join between two similar or dissimilar floor coverings then you would be looking for "transition strips"...
Have a look at

Yeah the door saddle in brackets was added by someone else after a few posts. Useful to give an idea of what the thread was about though.

crugers, yeah that link is good. Transition strips give the most results. I had wanted to view a few online before deciding what type to get.

Thanks all for replies.
