what are the stage payment certificate

Can someone please explain the timing schedule of stage payment certificates?

I realise it depends on the individual mortgage company involved.......but most seem to leave it open to the architect/engineer who is certifying same, is this right?

Are any mortgage companies specific to the timing sequence?

Bank of Ireland leave it up to us, we don't submit our certs until we need the money from them, not necssarily as soon as we get the next cert.
