What are the first steps to becomming self-employed?

Hi,
I'm currently working as a draughsperson but my contract runs out in two months, I think there is enough work out there to go to set up a home office and go it alone.What are my first steps in relation to tax etc?,any tips suggestions welcome,

I'm no expert but until one with some wisdom replies I would suggest you r first step might be to get some clients you could work with in the evenings and at weekends, when you have enough income from these and need more time then think of giving up the day job. A regular income and meeting others at work is a nice comfort.

Keep an accurate note of any monies you pay out and get in.
keep a copy of invoices and keep reciepts.
Any note book will do.
