weekly commuter train ticket

I have to say I'm not in the least bit impressed with Irish rail. I usually purchase montly ticket but as I was on holidays the first week of this month it worked out cheaper to get 3 weekly tickets. (€16.80X3 instead of €63)

But I ended up taking a long weekend so only needed a ticket from Wednesday to Friday on week. On the Wednesday I bought a daily return as thats all the money I had on me, and on the Thursday I said I'd get the weekly ticket and renew it on Thursdays.

Shocked wasn't the word for it when I put my ticket in the machine Monday morning for it to be rejected. Only then did I notice the expiry date, only 3 days after I purchases it!! I went to the desk to ask why the week long ticket I requested only last 3 days, and he smugly informed me that weekly tickets run from Sunday to Saturday! So I paid 16.80 for what should have cost me 10.20 if I had paid daily.

I wouldn't have minded any of this if the guy selling the ticket could have just said "you know this only lasts till Saturday". Is this a bad deal/rip off or was it just my bad luck for not asking how long a weekly ticket lasts for?

I think it's reasonable to presume that a weekly ticket would last for a week.
I use them too and the person usually asks when do I want it to start. I've purchased one on Tuesday and been able to use it the following Monday.

The one I get allows for the feeder bus to my local station but once I've used it on the bus and the train once, the magnetic strip stops working and I have to get someone's attention everytime I go through the turnstile. I mentioned it the first week and the Irish Rail person said "oh yeah, that happens, nothing you can do". Very annoying.

that's strange. i use the commuter services and alway sget a weekly ticket but get it from the machine instead. i got one today and it's good until 2nd august (i.e. a week). tbh i think it's pretty unfair that your ticket only lasted a few days. (btw the three day rail tickets can be quite handy when you take long weekends!)

There are [broken link removed] and there are 7 day tickets -- you got the former, not the latter, unfortunately! Yes, it should have been pointed out when you bought it that it probably wasn't what you wanted. 7 day tickets cost more, I think.

Don't forget if you can get your employer to pay for your ticket (yearly)and deduct the amount from your wages each pay period, you will get tax relief on the full amount.

I usually get my weekly rail ticket on a Wednesday and it lasts til the following Tuesday. The strip always stops working by Friday, very annoying!

Ye very annoying! Guess I'll know next time to check my ticket before running for the train!!
