Myself & my fiancee are due to get married abroad at the end of the year. Some friends & family have booked their trips. Now we've found out that my fiancee is pregnant & is due 2 days before the wedding! We're waiting for 12 weeks before telling anyone. Obviously this leaves us in all sorts of problems - the first one being that the wedding won't be going ahead. We're considering just the two of us heading off & getting married without the fuss - we're thinking it'll be easier to do now, rather than waiting till after the baby. How quickly can this be done, whether it's here or abroad.

Thanks for that - it's a bit of a shock & we're trying to work out the best way of going with this. Whether we go ahead with a quick wedding is another question. It looks like it could be too short notice. We still have 4 weeks before the 12 are up. As you can imagine the big problem is that whenever we meet up with friends and family, it's all Wedding talk. As we've only just got news on the pregnancy this is going to be extremely difficult over the coming weeks.
 
Congratulations on expecting a baby! Re what to tell everyone, you might say that you had to change the wedding date, that everything is great and that both of are taking some time out together. Apologise to those who have booked tickets and say that you'll update everyone soon. Everyone is going to know soon enough so I wouldn't make up excuses, the sooner you tell them the easier it will be for you to enjoy the pregnancy. You might want to have a quieter affair with you close family if you don't want to go abroad. Sometimes the easiest thing to do is to tell your family who will support you and in 9 months time you won't be saying it was a disaster, you'll be so happy!

Your friends and family will be delighted (if a bit surprised at first) with your news. Just an idea, to postpone the wedding until baby is about one and can toddle up the aisle behind you. This would take some pressure off you so you can focus on the pregnancy and look forward to the birth without worrying about a piece of paper. Its more acceptable now, to have children in tow at a wedding, not like years ago in Ireland. However there are still some old fashioned people out there with old fashioned views but they are in a minority. Put both your health and well being above everything and everyone else. You can actually get married with less than 3 months notice in some cases. You just need to apply for an exemption in the family court (in Smithfield if you're in Dublin).
 
Gretna Green is a lovely compromise - short hop on a plane, so a lot less upset for your partner. You can get married in a registry office, hotel, castle, by the side of a loch, whatever you like. Me and Mr ACA got hitched there in August 2002 - had the whole thing arranged within 6 weeks. If its important to you both or your families, you can always have a blessing when you get home. Just avoid it when Kerry McFatso is marrying her new taxi driver beau...looks like a lovely spot though.
 
It's all sunk in now! Not feeling so bad at all. We reckon 25 people have booked return flights abroad. I've contacted the wedding planner (not as fancy or expensive as it sounds) and informed her of what's happening & have checked to see what our options are. We'd still like to go abroad in 2008. We've paid @ 2k's worth of deposits. 1K is the non refundable booking on the venue, 350 is for the deposit for the planner and the other 650 is for deposit on accomadation. It's possible to change flights on the AerLingus Website for 35 Euro Per Flight. Best solution seems to be to pick another date (if possible) and for everyone to rearrange their flights etc. Hopefully it'll work out.
