Ways about changing jobs - views & advice

Hi

What's the best way of changing getting a new job ?

Not for me but agencies seem to be a waste of time

They seem to just advertise jobs to get people in the door and do the jobs ever exist ?

Is it easier to go to sites like irishjobs or monster ?

Also on monster if you upload your CV how do they stop your current
employer from accessing this ?

Agencies have their uses. You just have to make them work for you. I find that the way to achieve this is to arrange a face to face with them in the first instance and then following on from this, keep an eye on their specific websites to see what comes up. When a job comes up that you are suitable for, call them and ask why they haven't already called you! Being pushy with them works!

What industry are you in?

Its not for me but the person involved is in the Financial Sector

I know there are loads of jobs in fund accounting but that aint for them

Mutual funds / Banking or PA are the areas they are looking into

Diverse I know but they dont want to move for the sake of moving they are just not happy in their existing employment

It's not clear to me: is your friend looking for a career change OR a new job in their field?
Is the employer the problem, or is it the nature of the work which makes your friend unhappy?

Some things to think about:
Get your friend to assess his/her skills and attributes
Get a great CV done up by a professional; for a career change, a skills CV might be the best option
Start networking amongst friends and family - tell everyone s/he is looking for a new job
Search for job descriptions which might help to define areas of interest
Register with agencies
70% of jobs are NOT advertised, think of sending speculative applications to desirable companies - prepare a list from Internet/phone book/company directories (contact Chamber of Commerce for example)
Start working on brilliant cover letters

Bit of both

Just looking for something different but not to drastic. They were in the PA sector and then moved into Mutual funds and they are now thinking of going back to PA

Have been checking websites like irishjobs & monster etc. Also as posted previously I think you have to hassle the agencies sometimes and make yourself known. Some are good and some are just plain hopeless

I was wondering, thats what I thought it might be but the way you worded some of your posts calling it a sector threw me off.

I would not really regard that as a sector distinct from mutual funds / banking its more of a job type. A person could be a PA to someone in those industries or any other industry under the sun.

Likewise fund accounting is one other particular job type in Mutual Funds (and there are loads of others too) I would say that someone doing a PA job is unlikely to have the qualifications to be a fund accountant anyway without further education (though of course there are always exceptions).

If your friend is in mutual funds and is not a PA then maybe they could consider being a PA to a senior manager in a mutual funds company if being a PA is what they want to do, that way they can stay in the sector but be a PA again.
 
Why not identify/profile companies in which one would like to work, see if there are suitable vacancies and then apply directly?

Before you start looking at recruitment websites , which is best or how to use them ... and before you start looking at recruitment agencies (who to use, which of them specialise in your area etc) ... you need to start asking yourself a simple question ... what do you want ... or should I say what does your friend want if you are making an inquiry on their behalf.

Way too often, as far as I am concerned, people don't spend enough time figuring out what they want from their career/work. They are too re-active to what jobs are out there and blame companies/recruiters for what jobs are available as opposed to pro-actively working on a defined career path and building their skills.

Without trying to sound glib, the most important thing a person can do, is to do a job they love doing. The difficult bit is figuring out what that career/job is.
