I am getting my water cylinder replaced in my hot press. The plumber has offered to get the cylinder for me and install. Would it be any cheaper if I purchased the cylinder direct from a manufacturer/supplier myself? Are we talking large amounts of money here?

He wants the old one I'd imagine - price of copper these days. Price them yourself and ask him for a price for starters I'd imagine.

Your talking a couple of hundred euro for the tank and a couple of hundred too switch them,I don’t think you will get much change out of €300-€500 euro.
You could buy the cylinder yourself but don’t forget if you need new fittings or immersion too suit the new cylinder will add a few more quid.
You can recycle the old cylinder and get a few bob back that way.

I have a damaged 300l stainless steel cylinder tank.. What much would I likely get for scrap?!

if you buy it direct from the supplier, you will pay 23% VAT on it, you will pay 13.5% through the plumber. You will also risk getting the wrong one, having to arrange delivery, risk damaging it yourself if you shove it in to the boot of your car, etc, etc, etc,

Let the plumber get it himself. He'll know what is needed, no messing.

You can see prices listed here and judge whether the price he's quoting is in the right ballpark.

Regardless of who buys the tank, you are entitled to keep the old one should you so choose. This site gives you an idea of scrap metal.
