Not to mention the waste of cupboard space.
We have a bin in the cupboard, but it's just a regular, small swing bin and we cut out part of the shelf to accommodate it.
As it's a small bin, it gets emptied regularly and isn't at all yecky.
As for the space it takes up - that depends on how many cupboards you have, we have enough. Those large free-standing bins take up a fair bit of floor space and are generally unattractive.

Thanks everyone I agree with delgirl that general bins do not look nice and they take up space, in main land Europe bins are generally not seen as should be the way, small bin way to go one for food waste and other for general waste, been small will allow foe easy emptying , cheers

Agreed free standing bins really let down a kitchen. My own solution, there was a bin under the kitchen sink, it's in my garage unused, where the previous owner left it. I put in an Island and at the end rectangle, where I work and which cannot be seen I have a drawer put in and I can pull that out and inside it is a free standing bin with bag and lid. Out of sight and in a convenient location. For food waste we put it in a basin (type that used to be for washing dishes) and it's emptied a couple of times a day to the outside bin and cleaned afterwards in the dishwasher.
Don't do what another poster on here did a few years ago, they cut a circulalar hole in the countertop to drop the rubbish into the bin below.

B&Q, and most of the kitchen cabinet suppliers will have a few options on this theme, including ones that attach to the inside of the cabinet door or a sliding frame that sits within the cabinet and will accommodate one or more bins. I have the latter with two bins that slide out from the cabinet. Handy to have general waste and recycling bins at hand, without cluttering the floor space.
