I'd like to start cycling to work (cannot avail of recent Government scheme) but wondering if there are any good informative sites out there.

Am wondering as to whether I should go with a racer or a mountaIn-bike etc etc ...

(will be for commuting to work and long distances)

There is a website called "Boards.ie" which has a cycling section. Some very good information and discussion there.

Hi,
My view:

Mountain bikes are useless for commuting.
The usual racer has poor back position for the older cyclist and isn't robust enough for Dublin traffic.

Go with a straight handle-barred hybrid. I've had a trek for eight years. It's very light, very strong and excellent round town.

Boards cycling forum is good. Like the others said get a hybrid. Bike Radar is a good site for info and reviews too.

Hyrid is like a racer/road bike but with straight handle bars, 28" wheels and thin tyres. Has lugs/mounts in the frame for mudguards, carrier/rack. Usually theres more clearance in the brakes for the fitting of mudguards. The lighter the better, that means no suspension.
