VW Passat Headlight Bulb

Warning light flashed yesterday to say that left dim bulb was going/gone. No problem I thought and I had booked in car for service with main dealer, I dropped in on the way home to pick up the bulb.

I had to take a seat though when they quoted me €320 - no mistake and no decimal point missing!

I was told it is a special gas filled bulb.

Question is, can I take out the one on the right and replace with standard bulbs?
 
I never heard of bulbs that expensive,I used to have a passat and had bulbs changed few times only cost few euros.I would be shopping around,what year is your passat?
 
That's laying it on fairly thick even for a VW main dealer. IIRC an entire headlight assembly is about €250/300.
 
I needed a dipped headlight for a Volvo and the lady in Halfords said the computer was telling her it needed a xenon bulb which would be over 100 euro. She queried it with the fitter and he said an ordinary one was fine. Fitted it cost me 20 euro. Its working perfectly.

I did not think Xenon and ordinary ( halogen ) bulbs were interchangeable, the xenon costs more however the light is better and the bulb lasts longer, fir light intensity typically 3000 lumens from xenon and 1400 from halogen, might I suggest a call to the Volvo service manager to clarify.

I think so. Question is, can the other one be taken out and then both replaced with a cheaper type?
