Hello. My VW Beetle was low on fuel so petrol light was on. However, i filled it up but the petrol light is still on. Is this bad? I just bought the car and it has no warrenty so i dont know if it has happened before. Just wondering has anyone had the same problem and knows if its serious or just something simple. Thanks.

Sounds like a sticking valve or sensor.

Googling: Volkswagen Beetle +"petrol light" found only the above post.

Try the specialist VW forums but it doesn't look like a generic problem with so few hits.

Failing that see if you can find a garage open on Monday and ask them.

MSL in Pottery Road (01 236 9222) are a VW Main Dealer as are Foster Motor Company (012942222).

I have bought cars from both MSL and Fosters and had cars serviced by both.

ONQ.

Did the petrol gauge go up after the fill or has it stayed on empty.

Should not be a major problem as long as you are careful not to un out of fuel.

When i filled up the needle did go up. I tried getting more fuel today but still didnt go off :(!! It was really really empty when i picked it up. Do you think that had anything to do with it?

I am not sure just guessing there may be a seperate switch (pick up) that works the light.

As long as the gauge is woring I would just leave it until the next service is due. Then mention it to the mechanic.

I may just clear after running the tank down to near empty then fill again.

Not a major problem IMO
