Hi,

I am thinking of buying a 2nd hand BMW 320d with the low emissions from a registered dealer in NI, the car was first registered in January 2008 by BMW, my question is, if i purchase this car now and don't register it in my name until 1st July 08, i.e. leave it in the garage or family home in the north would i avail of the reduced 16% vrt?

Firstly - you may be better posting in the Cars forum.
Secondly - strange for a car registered in Jan-08 being sold as second hand already.

Also you may be better off for a relative up north to buy it for you and you buy it from them in July.
You may be asked for some Docs to show when you bought the car by the VRT office

There has been some mention (another thread around here somewhere) for people who buy cars between Jan 08 and July 08 to opt into the new tax system (e.g. use the lower rates).

This won't allow you the lower VRT also possible come July, but it would help for the ongoing tax costs and especially when it comes to resale.

Yes, going by the information they have released to date. But I would advise waiting until they actually publish the legislation as there have already been several changes from what was originally announced. Check the cars forum for more info

Another thing to beware of is if the car is less than 6 months old it will attract VAT also. And if it is less than a year old the VRT office will look for a receipt as to when the car was purchased, if you purchased it when less than 6 months old you will have to pay VAT which will make it very expensive. If the car has less than 6000 miles you will also have to pay VAT

was 6000 miles,, maybe splitting hairs now,, are we raelly sure people if the reduced tax will be for imported cars too

Yep Revenue are talking about back dating the new VRT rules to Jan 08!! That's going to rightly screw so many people.

Oh and it's 6,000 MILES, also the car is liable to VAT if less than 6 months old too.

Buy and RX-8 up North! (They're going up 8,000 in the switch)

It's definitely NOT 6,000 miles http://www.revenue.ie/ and it could be an expensive mistake for someone to make (see quote below).

13. When is VAT chargeable and payable?

New means of transport from other Member States of the EU
In the case of a new means of transport i.e. land vehicles (excluding agricultural tractors) that were supplied six months or less after the date of first entry into service or have travelled 6,000 Kilometres or less, VAT is chargeable and normally payable at the time of registration in the State, even where there is evidence, e.g. an invoice, that VAT was paid in the country of purchase.

Do you have the source for the increase to 8,000?

Thanks
Rog.
