Hi not sure if this is the right forum for this question. My son took home a 29 yr old car from me Zealand last Jan. He didn’t understand the VRT situation in Ireland. But has been told by a friend he should have contacted nct and revenue.can anyone point us in the right direction.

If he lived there and owned the car for at least 6 months, no vrt will be due.

But it will need to get nct and registered.

Thanks all for the info. Someone told him to wait until it’s 30 yrs old which will be Jan 19 when it will be classic. It has not been on the road here at all it’s garaged. Will he get into trouble with VRT office or revenue if he waits until Jan. It’s already here eight months. He does not know what to do. Is there a penalty for not registering it?

Additional VRT is payable where the owner fails to complete the registration process within 30 days of the car arriving in the country, and the amount charged will depend on how long the car has been in the state prior to registration.

The car will also need to supply details for the Cert of Conformance to prove the vehicle complies with all EU standards, see here.
