VPN Broadband connecting 2 remote Pc's

Im about to have a go at a VPN connection of 2 remote pc's , both with eircom broadband using their Netopia Cayman 3300 boxes. I just want to connect these 2 pcs directly - theres no network involved.
I had a look at it a couple of months ago, and didnt manage to do it then,
and about to have another go.

Is there anyone out there, who has done this explicitly and might save me a lot of time with a few relevent pointers?

What do you mean by 'connect'? Sharing files? Remote terminal sessions?

Thanks rainyday, It would be a remote terminal session to run an application directly on the other Pc, in a normal multi-user fashion.
