It's the ould fellas 60th next week and I'm looking for a present with a difference. What i was thinking of was, together with myself, was orgainizing for the 2 of us to head of for a week or two on a building project or the like in an underdeveloped country. I'm aware of niall mellons projects but his next trip to south africa is in spring 2010,,,,,,,would like to get onto something perhaps over the winter.

We're both from construction backgrounds......I'd appreciate it if anone could advise......We'd be well up for a good challenge and would be prepared to "rough and tough it".....he's only 60 and apparently it;s the new forty!

Thanks in advance

My neighbour went.. it cost him 5k to get going, (through the organisation he went with) He raised it through sponsership, but I think it was a bit much as he was giving up his time and skills to help an underdeveloped country.
Anyway..They built a school If I remember correctly.
He really enjoyed it, and is raising the money to go again.

So be aware it's not just your fare you have to pay for.

what about chernobyl children international?

to be honest i think that even if you could tell your Dad what you've organised for you both it would be a lovely gift, no matter when it actually happens. Even if you have to wait until the Spring, it would give you a chance maybe to do some fundraising or look for sponsorship dor goods/materials etc?

cheers woodbine you maybe right. about the timeframe.....i've a total open mind to this idea, so please keep the ideas going

nice idea, but is this a present for your Father or you?
Would he like to work long hours in a very hot sun to celebrate his 60th?

How about the[broken link removed] Project?

It was started by Irish veterans who had served in Lebanon and who have now gone back to build medical centres and schools.

They have a trip going in Sept and also Oct to help with a school for the deaf.

They are even organising a skydiving event as a fund raiser - that alone would be something different for the ould fellas 60th

[broken link removed] is a charity i've been involved with for many years.
They are based in Belfast also have charity status in this country.
The work the do is tremendous especially for such a small charity and any help, at any time of the year, would be greatly appreciated.
You would have the option of volunteering in Kenya or Nepal and would be working and living along with the locals.

Here's some of the work they've done recently and if you would like any further info please feel free to PM me.

Yeah it mightn't seem like the ideal 60th present.....but i know he'd really value it........as would I!

thanks for all the suggestions guys.......i've some homework to do now

Why go over seas? Offer your time here at home there are plenty of worthwhile projects that would snap you both up.

Niall Mellon has a 1000 volunteers going to Cape town on 6th November. There are always a few spaces available due to cancelations.

Did you check out havenpartnership.com they will be going to Haiti on 25th October.

Good luck with whatever trip you decide to go on.

Talking to this crowd at Bloom in the park this year and they do stuff in Lesotho. They seemed good and genuine
