Voluntary Redundancy

Would I be right in assuming that if you opt for voluntary redundancy that you don't have any entitlements to Jobseekers benefits?

No. JB will be payable but there may be a period of disqualification; see keypost guide for Jobseekers.

We were told on Thursday that our company is looking for 4 people to take voluntary redundancy and that they want the names by Friday 30th July or they will make it compulsory. They are also talking about flexible working hours for the rest of the workforce. I am in my late 50's and have worked non stop since I was 15. I have been in my present job for over 11 years and really enjoy the job. I don't know where to turn. Should I opt for the voluntary redundancy or wait to see what happens? This is a quite a large multi national company but don't know yet what the deal would be. At my age I think it would be almost impossible to find work and I can't stand the thought of not being in full time employment. I was hoping to hold on to the job for at least another 6 years. Also we remortgaged about 7 years ago so I still have quite a bit to pay off.

My wife has been on illness benefit and applied for an exemption to go to university but now we don't know what to do for the best. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You should be advised what the deal is before having to submit your name for redundency so ask for the details of what your figures would be. Then it is a matter of working out whether you can afford it, what the liklihood is if you stayed,of the co continuing into the long term. It is a big decision and I wish you luck.
