Much though it sticks in my craw to encourage people to upgrade their mobile phones... — I thought I'd post this here just in case you hadn't heard about it.

[broken link removed]
Applies to both new phones and upgrades; €10 up front, €20 for on-line registration, €20 bonus when you move from another network and keep your number plus €10 for 7 months following registration.
Vodafone
Applies to both new phones and upgrades; the additional credit is issued at €10/month for the next 12 months.

It's not spelled out, but I suspect that in both cases you have to buy €20 credit to get the 'free' monthly €10...

For what it's worth the (previous?) Vodafone €80 "free" credit with certain RTG packages does not have any strings attached and comes through automatically each month. It may still be that you had to buy some credit every 6 months to keep the phone active for incoming calls but you don't have to buy topups to get the "free" credit.

Glad to hear it. I wouldn't know, because I still haven't used up the €80 credit I got back in October 2005... 'Billy No-Mates', or what!

Dr M

Reading this forces me to accept that I am even older than I like to think

I dont doubt that you are correct but I just dont understand what it all means.

What is 'free' monthly credit ? is it different to free monthly credit ?

What does 'online registration' actually do ? and why would one want to do it ?

P.S. I used to know who the Rolling Strones were so I cant be that old - can I ?

Re: Vodafone/Meteor PAYG — now with €120 'free' credit

I'm so old, I spell 'Old Skool' 'Old School'... and I put quotation marks around the word 'free' when you have to pay to get it — e.g. 'buy one, get one "free"' or, in Meteor's case, 'buy €20 credit, get €10 "free"/keep your "free" texts'...

What does 'online registration' actually do ? and why would one want to do it?
It means that you log on to the Meteor website and fill in your details yourself, instead of dealing with a customer service agent over the phone — infinitely easier and more efficient, and you get €10 extra credit if you do it that way.

P.S. Who are these 'Rolling Stones' you speak of? Some kind of pop group, I suppose?

Time context of Rolling Stones is nearer Doris Day than the Sugerbabes so I guess that makes them some kind of 'pop group' rather than some kind of pop group.

P.S. Why didnt Micks latest go to No 1 for the usual ten weeks ?

was talking a friend who works in the vodaphone call centre in dundalk yesterday and he said that as long as you used your phone in 6 months it remained 'active' only customers who didnt use the phone in a period of 6 months had to purchase an additional credit - as low as €5 - to remain 'active'. said you would be surprised at the number of customers who didn't use the phone within the 6 months and also something about 2 years and re- allocating the number if it wasn't used within 2 years. when I said it was probably due to people losing their phones and not being bothered about buying a new one he just said 'probably'. in short if you get this €120 credit and make even on call within the 6 months you remain 'active' and another call within the next 6 months etc you remain active without having to purchase additional credit.
