Visit to the U.S

My passport is due for renewal in August. If I decide to visit the U.S in April is my passport valid. Is there a 6 month rule.

The US seems to require 6 months but has treaties with lots of countries where those countries agree to extend the validity of the passport for a further 6 months after expiry. Ireland is included in the list.
