I am going to be moving house in the next few months. There is an absolutely enormous tree on the pavement outside. It looks very old. It has grown with a slight lean to one side and if it were to fall down in a storm the house would be directly in its path. Do local councils have responsibilty for trees on public roads? Should I ask the Council (Dun Laoghaire Co Co) to examine the tree and check if it is safe ? any advice appreciated.

Provided the road has been taken in charge by the council then they will likely have a responsibility to ensure that it is not a danger. You could contact the Engineering Department directly and report your concern that it is a danger to passing traffic/pedestrians. You could also contact some of the local councillors and ask them to intervene.
