I am a consultant for a company based outside the EU. I know I dont have to charge VAT but do I have to register for VAT now I am over the threshold. My accountant says probably not Revenue dont seem sure its hard to even get to talk to anyone over the phone. If I dont have to charge VAT surely I dont have to register any ideas?

Assuming you are a consultant that provides consultancy services to a company outside the EU.....

I know I dont have to charge VAT

That's correct, but just be mindful that you have evidence that your customer is established outside the EU. See 'Supplies to business customers outside the EU (B2B)':

According to Revenue - you must register if you are an accountable person (accountable and liable for VAT). Based on what you have described, you are not. If you are acquiring goods from other Member States or receiving services from abroad, you would have to register, but if this does not apply to you, then I would be inclined to agree with your accountant. Not sure why its so hard to get Revenue to answer questions dont want them to come after me later on. I am not acquiring anything basically a employee in all but name.

Not so sure why your accountant can't give you an answer. Maybe change your accountant
