I am registered for VAT in Ireland, was up North recently buying somthing not related to the company and was told I could use my VAT number to buy the item VAT free. My question was, do the Inland Revenue in NI send my VAT number with purchases details to the Revenue in ROI.

X.

Seems like you're asking for help to evade tax. You've come to the wrong place, if I interpret your question correctly.

No, im not evading tax, I purchased the item and payed the VAT, was wondering why this retailer offered me the item tax free if i could produce a VAT number, surely i would have ended up paying the VAT when the Revenue got wind of it, or do they?

If it's not for your company then you should not be quoting the company's VAT number. I have to agree with RainyDay's initial analysis and reaction to this query.

I also agree, was just curious as to whether this was common practice with retailers on the border - what advantage could they gain from this.

xabi - some of the posters here are 'whiter than white' so you have to watch your 'p' and 'q's.

When you are registered for VAT you may import free of VAT and account for the VAT here whilst at same time claim a deduction so its cash flow positive from your point. That is if you paid NI VAT it would have been deductible in any event here. So it was always deductible. The EU argument is that the importing counyry is disadvantaged and this got rectified by allowing this the VAT to be picked up in the importing country and the deduction given in the importing country,

There is an EU web site where the NI company can check your reg details.
