Just wondering whether anyone has any advice on this as I've just started pricing to get an ash cut-string stairs varnished or lacquered professionally.
Its a standard enough size and shape with one return at the bottom chamfered spindels and newal posts and 4 ft bannister along the top also as our hallway is double height. The underside of the stairs is finished in ash sheeting and will also be varnished.
First price via the joiner who only asked a local guy that is meant to be good to look at it and price (its not fitted yet) was €1000 which I thought seemed pricey. I have no details yet on what that price includes.
Any comparisons or tips on what to look out for out there?
We're nervous of a DIY job on this one particularly.

We varnished our white oak stairs late last year, gave it 4 coats on rails and newels and 5 on steps. Did it on weekends and took 5 weekends, a lot of work, sanding in between coats , a real pain. Turned out top notch though. Money saved covered something else, I'm sure !!
