Valencia - should you travel or not?

Booked a trip to Valencia many months age - travelling in less than 2 weeks time - is it appropriate to go after the devastating floods. I see our Taoiseach is advising against travelling. I’ve received correspondence from where I’m staying (city centre) asking us to travel to support the local people.

Any thoughts?
 
I don't see why you wouldn't go. As far as I'm aware Valencia city was not hit to any significant extent by the flooding. Valencia is also the province and it is towns to the south of the city that have been devastated. If you can't find any specific information that would show a significant effect on your trip I would go.
 
Those poor people. I’d do some investigating and I’d travel if I was not going to be in any danger or a possible burden. I would not go if there’s a clean up operation ongoing in the area.
 
Response received from accommodation:
we inform you that right now the city and the accesses are completely safe and nothing has been affected, although it may seem paradoxical, to follow is the best way to help the local population as many of our workers do live in affected areas and if tourism falls the problem can be greater.

We are not strangers to the tragedy, we try to help acquaintances and co-workers who have experienced it privately.
 
You should go. It’s clear from news reporting that Valencia itself has not been affected, The last thing they need is cancellations. By going you are supporting their economy and people’s livelihoods.
 
It’s safe to go but whether you would want to in the circumstances is another matter.

As others have said, the best way to show support would be to travel as planned.
 
If the Department of foreign affairs is advising against travel to a particular area your travel insurance will be invalidated if you need to make a claim.
 
Speaking to family in the area, city centre is fine, suburbs and outside towns are the ones that got hit. Having said that, a lot of businesses are short staffed as people deal with sorting out their own issues and shops are not fully supplied as well for pure logistical reasons. Given what happened in Barcelona on Monday, I'd personally be inclined to give it a miss if I could rebook elsewhere
 
Salvador’s in post #10 captured the issue perfectly. As I can’t cancel my trip to Valencia (part of a longer hol), I’ve shortened my stay in the city down to 2 nights and will travel down south (flying home via Seville). I’m hoping things will have improved somewhat by next week. I’ll report back.
