Hi ,
Thinking about getting UTV broadband. 29.99 per month and free evening and weekend calls to local , national and UK.
Not bad for 30 Blips. Anybody used it?
I'd appreciate any comments. You can also change your rental over to UTV so only one bill! Seems like a goods deal..
Tks

As mentioned I have recently transferred over to UTV broadband from Irish Broadband (wireless) and find the former excellent in comparison to the latter in terms of reliability and throughput. I would definitely recommend it so far and indeed have signed up for the trial period at home myself recently and look forward to getting it in. As with any broadband package it makes sense to get a trial period or an initial short term contract if possible in order to evaluate the service.

Hi Clubman,
Thanks for reply. Looks like UTV is the job for me.
Only have to pay eircon the €130 for connection...

You will also have to pay €25 p.m. line rental to eircom (or eventually some other telco) so the full cost will really be c. €55 p.m. (exluding any other phone usage). If you don't really need a land-line other than for internet access you might want to check out non land-line based broadband alternatives such as wireless (notwithstanding my caveats about Irish Broadband above and elsewhere - you may be lucky with them and get good service - I/my company was not), cable (e.g. ntl:) etc. Check out the general broadband links in the topic I mentioned above for more on the alternatives.

Hi Clubman,
Good advice. The good thing is that you can now pay the rental to UTV so it means only one bill (excluding calls). Unfortuantely I live out in the sticks so no irish broadband or NTL. I dont really want a phone line just internet but looks like I'm stuck with the phone package. Anyway I'll probably go ahead with connection to Eircom and then order UTV internet broadband and switch line rental to them.
Tks again

If you're out in the sticks and more than a few miles from a digital exchange then even ADSL may not be an option! If not then it may be that only satellite broadband (not cheap) or co-operative wireless (maybe something like [broken link removed]) may be the alternatives...

Checked with UTV and luckily enough my estate is broadband enabled...no ntl though and no wireless broadband.
Just have to wait to get line connected from eircom first..

Have had it since June 2004 with no probs. Overall I am happy with the service.

Is the 8 GB download limit sufficient for someone who might download the odd song and use the web around 1-2 hours per day (just for reading webpages and making the odd post on AAM)?

utv

Is 8gb per month? Ive got NTL bb and take down 4 or 5 700mb movies, a lot of mp3s, check a lot of mail and post to a few forums every month and still wouldnt go over 8gb.

If your average mp3 song is 4mb, theres an average 15 songs on an album , thats 60 mb per album. 8gb is .. hmm, let see... (carry the 1,..must feed the mice ......) a LOT of music.
Id say your safe enough.

Re: utv

8GB should be more than enough for most users. In any case many ISPs don't always enforce the relevant per MB charge when the download cap has been exceeded. Check boards.ie for the latest on this sort of thing.
