Using Mobile phone in Turkey

Can anyone advise me on using my bill paid Three Ireland mobile phone in Turkey. I was advised to take sim out and just use wifi. I can't do that because I need to be able to respond to a text sent by aib to verify its myself using my debit visa card within 4 hrs or they could freeze my card! They no longer give you the option to put in a travel note before you go. I find this frustrating because id rather not use the phone for fear of running up a huge bill accidently. Yes I can turn off data but I'm unfamiliar with how phones work! What charges could I incur if I get phone call/messages? Can the phone turn on data automatically? Any advice welcome! Is there an add on that I could avail of with three?

Can you not just leave the phone on, turn data off and ignore calls whilst accepting texts? AFAIK you can turn data off and to turn it on when using WIFI. Check phone settings.

Three have a roaming add on that covers Turkey.
Alternatively if you're not comfortable with the phone settings, you could buy a non smart phone and pop your Sim into it for text messages.

Pretty much every modern phone allow you to choose settings for mobile and wifi data separately, so you can disable mobile data while still leaving wifi enabled.
