Using gomo in the USA

I have an ordinary gomo account and am currently in the US

I only need data roaming for calling an Uber or google maps but it's odd

When I tried to use it yesterday to call an Uber it wasn't working. Then I found a text from gomo

so I went back into a wifi area and clicked on that and it was ok.

But today, I was completely stuck as I was not in a wifi area. Am I doing something wrong?

Are you sure that the link in that message is legit?
It looks odd and doesn't seem to be from GoMo.
The '-' before "com" seems very strange.

Edit: oh, maybe it is legit. Not exactly obvious though...
All that GoMo seem to say about non-EU roaming is this:

Why can’t I connect to data while I am roaming?

If you cannot connect to data while roaming:
  1. Check data settings to ensure your mobile data roaming is enabled.
  2. If you are roaming outside of the EU, make sure you have accepted all relevant T&C’s when prompted.

Yeah that's how it works in the USA you need to click on the link and activate it, looks old and archaic but that's the gomo system.

When you're out and about and mobile data isn't working does it make any difference if you switch off WiFi and then try to access that roamingalerts link? Seems confusing but that seems to be what GoMo suggest in that X/Twitter post...

Thanks for the ideas.

I had wifi switched off. or maybe i was just out of range

Anyway, I switched it off just now to check. I had data roaming on.

I tried to access the internet and no joy. No text either.

so i clicked on the text from yesterday and got this

I am not going to spend a fortune in frustration waiting for eir to answer and then not to be able to fix it

Login to your gomo.ie account then next time you are connected via wifi. You can chat to a support agent for free.

Update

I think I have set this up correctly. despite the appallingly complex instructions.

Anyway I am accessing data so I hope it's not via the ordinary expensive Gomo

eSims are supported on iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14, and later. Gomoworld do a eSim thats good value if you run out of data.

You can contact them via chat and they will tell you. Gomo are actually helpful like that.

Sometimes it works

Other times I get the stupid eir "phone this number"

I have no idea if it's temperamental or is it me?

I’d also recommend Gomoworld e-sim.

I was in the U.S. for 3 weeks last September, and i am on Gomo here. I bought the €19.99 Gomoworld e-sim(for my iphone 12), before i left, and activated it on landing, and it worked with no issues.
My companion had an android phone, and he had no e-sim capability, so i hot spot shared my data with them for the entire trip, again, no issues, and we were on the go a lot, across 4 states, planes, trains and automobiles, also used it for sat nav in our two car hire trips. never an issue, and we only used around 20GB of the 35 GB allowance.

I’d highly recomend it but check your phone has e-sim capability, which is basically a virtual sim card, there is no physical sim, as having that is a prerequisite.

The 35gb dataplan covers 30 days.

Got a quick response which suggests it could be temperamental.
I have tried all of these suggestions, and still no go

Maybe it will work later in a different location. I am in a busy city not some remote location

- First turn on Airplane mode for 1 minute and turn it off - this should reset your data location for the nearest mobile mast
- Check to make sure that your plan is still active and you have data remaining - this is visible on the home page of the app.

To manually search for another network on your GoMoWorld eSIM. We advise you to follow the below stepsl
- Go to Settings
- Go to Mobile Data
- Click the GoMoWorld eSIM
- Click “Network Selection”
- Switch off the “automatic” setting, to change it to manual
- A list of available roaming partners will show. Please try selecting each of these to see if any of these work better for you. You should now be able to connect to another GoMoWorld roaming partner.

If thats is unsuccessful in the Data settings change the Acess Point Name to whatever of the two is not active currently so http://data.myeirmobile.ie/ (data.myeirmobile.ie) or http://data.mymeteor.ie/ (data.mymeteor.ie)
We hope that this has resolved your issue

another response. but it seems odd given that it works for everyone else

It would depend on the connection in the area yes, the coverage would depend on the mast in the area.
