Hello all,

I have been seen a used Lexus GS300

1999

81000 miles

2 owners

NCT until end of 2011.

I know that it is old but the mileage is relatively low and being a LEXUS/TOYOTA it should be reliable.

It is listed at EUR5200 so I would expect to buy it for less than EUR5000.

I would appreciate peoples views.

Would it be reasonable to expect a couple of years troublefree motoring from this car or would I be buying myself a lot of problems.

Thank you.

Can't think why you might imagine you would be buying bother, unless you might think the mileage might be dodgy or the car has been crashed and repaired.

IF not, then its a Lexus with only 81000 miles on the clock. Thats very low mileage for a Toyota/Lexus engine, especially if its been serviced regularly.

And it has obviously just passed its NCT recently, so this means its in fairly good working order now, and has decent tyres, all electrics etc.

I think you'd be looking to get easily more than 2 years out of it, with no hassles at all (as much as buying a 2nd hand car can give you no hassles), considering its brand.

The only downside I could see would be the big tax due to the engine size (3lit I think) and the mpg, which would probably be low too.

It's a car that will be hard to tax,so the seller will have problems getting a buyer in the current climate.I'd be offering about €4,000 for it,as you will get plenty top end cars of that age going cheap.
As for reliability,I would have no worries on a car like that if the mileage is genuine. Is there service history with it ?

Tax would be high at €1293 per annum.
Did you get an insurance quote? A 32 year old male insuring a 3l car could be very pricey.
Fuel consumption will be very, very heavy - low 20's mpg.

I would think twice if I were you.

10/11 year old car
81k miles
3.0 litre engine €1300 tax, add another few quit on this budget
I would offer 3.5k and maybe go to 4k, and the seller is lucky
edit
Forget about the running costs of big engine, tax, insurance and petrol in the first year alone will dwarf the purchase price

insurance is not just based on engine size, although it is a major factor!
im 28 now, but when i was 26 i had a BMW X5 4.4 V8 petrol insured fully comp in my own name for less than 600euro with hibernian!

To answer your question you'd need a full service history with receipts and you'd need to know how it had been driven, but generally big lazy engines are the ones that last longest, particularly the Toyotas. If its been well looked after another 100k miles should not be a problem.

2004 Porsche 911 3.6l , comprehensive, mid-30s, EUR815. That's very reasonnable imo
Let's ignore tax and petrol though...

Can't believe some of the quotes mentioned here for some of those high value cars.

I am 40, drive a 1991 MR2 worth next to nothing, have been driving for 15yrs with no accidents, and yet my insurance went from €550 to €850 this year, and that was 3rd party fire and theft!! And it took me 5 years for my insurance to drop from €1000 to the €550.

And it was always with Hibernian, but I have had to move this yr as the premium just wasn't acceptable at €850.

How do other get such good quotes?
