Used Car Inspection

Can't confirm that they won't charge for travel, but I would assume AA have a pretty national coverage so would be surprised if they did.

It's €214 for the "Quick check" so depending on how much you plan on spending on the used car you may wish to go with the slightly lesser examination.

Was looking at a 99 BMW 318 for around €9500. What would you recommend. I don't know much about cars

A car costing €9500 you could justify paying the €360, but personally I'd suggest that the AA guys would spot most problems on the quick check, saving the €140 odd.

I'd also suggest you get any friend with a good knowledge of cars to go along with you and take it on a test drive. Someone with a knowledge of cars will know exactly what to look out for, listen for etc.
Plenty of guides around on the do's and don'ts of buying used cars so going through a few of those may provide you with some info. Also, lots of specialist BMW sites around where you may be able to find out about issues with specific models.

9,500 for a '99 318 sounds like a bit below book price. What kind of mileage/options is there on it?

It's not too low (well, low enough to cause concern), I'd assume just a few miles up on it draging the price down a little.

Having a quick look on www.axaplus.ie...

Each of these could be got with a 10% to 25% discount if bought through the Axa/BFS agreement (available to all axa customers). Some would also come with a warrenty depending on the dealer involved.

Speaking from experience, I'd highly recommend the AA. They inspected two cars for me and the first one turned out to have been badly crashed and then repaired... so although the inspection costs over €200, it's worth it. I would have been seriously out of pocket if it wasn't for them.

I don't think they charge extra for the location of the car but not certain about this.

Really I can't recommend the AA any higher for the inspection. They are very thorough (inspection takes up to 2 hours or more), they are very honest and straightforward about the cars condition and also you get an AA report which can help attracting buyers if you plan to resell the car in the future.

Any feedback on whether it's worth the extra for the full inspection or if the "quick" inspection is probably enough?

Prob not as detailed as the AA but if you can get the car to dublin. These guys will inspect for 80 euro

I requested the 'essential inspection' in both case but I got a reduction in the price because I was a member of the AA.

I think depends on the price of the car, but I think it is worth paying the extra.

The damage to the crashed car I was looking at was identified when the car was lifted and the chassis examined and this check is not included in the 'quick check'. The AA inspector told me that he found other indicators that something was up but lifting the car that confirmed the accident damage. This may not have been identified with the 'quick inspection'.

Thanks for the information on this. In the process of buying my first car and will need to use one of these inspection services as I know next to nought about cars. Can someone who used this AA service let me know the short hand process for a complete newbie. Do they collect the car or do you need to visit an AA garage as such with the car? and at the end of the process, do you need to collect the car or is dropped back to a specified location.

Apologies if the question is silly, and thanks for your time.

Do you think it is worth getting the car examined if it has passed the NCT recently...?
