Use up old entitlement or start fresh Unemployment Benefit

Following redundancy I starting claiming UB in Jan 2010. I came off it for 3 or 4 weeks in June when I got a few weeks work. On that occasion I contacted the SW office and they stopped my claim and it restarted after that. Again at the end of October 2010 I managed to find somework so I contacted the social welfare and let them know. I have worked since then and am due to finish work again today the end of February.

What I'm trying to figure out therefore is when I start to claim my Unemployment Benefit from 1st March 2011 and I starting afresh again or do I use up what's left to claim from last year. I figure that I have approx 12 weeks left from my last time claiming. Does that get added on to this claim or am I starting 52 weeks afresh.

Update

Went to social welfare office to try to get an answer was told sure we'll start new application anyway as you're after working for more than 13 weeks, I tried to explain that wasn't the issue and they couldn't answer when questioned on whether there were any weeks left on my last claim that should be used first. I very much got the impression that the person didn't know and the easiest solution was to start afresh with new claim. When I pressed on again and asked I was given number in Dublin to ring to raise the query. Surely the person in the social welfare office should have been able to help. Am waiting to summon up the energy to try the number.

I could be wrong but my understanding is that by working for 13 weeks you have now come back into benefit for a full 52 weeks. If you were to restart your old claim as you say you would only qualify for 12 weeks.

You could try contact one of the Citizens Information offices and they will be able to give you some help/advice. They also have an information centre Lo Call 1890 777 121 or +353 21 452 1600

You could also run the search option on either www.citizensinformation.ie or www.welfare.ie
