Hi,

Excuse the stupid questions but I'm hoping you guys can help me out!

Considering setting up a trade account with a US Broker (IB). What I want to know is in relation to tax. If I sell stock within my account and reinvest it in other stock, am I taxed on the gains from the stock I sell, or am I only taxed on the withdrawals I make from the account?

Finally, if any of you have the exact rates (what rates I am charged considering it is a US Broker account for an Irish person) I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Pay tax on sale of stock, broker withdrawal is irrelevant for tax.
CGT 33% on sale of stock, country of broker doesn't matter. Income dividend tax payable annually. This is at marginal rate plus PRSI and USC. Watch out for DWT from foreign shares, you can claim tax credit for some with revenge eg. US shares. Search this forum for more information as this has been discussed lots before

Also US estate tax will be payable on your death as using US broker. Whopping 60%. Non US brokers such as Degiro don't have this. Again search this forum
