Updating linked files in Excel

When I update links to other excel files, Excel keeps prompting me to find these files in the directory.
Does anybody know of a way to speed up the process?

What version of Excel are you using?

When you are asked to find the files in the directory - can you find them? Do you find them in the same directory?
It is strange if you can find them but Excel can't!

Are you opening the file through an email program such as outlook in which case they would be cached to the temporary folder ?
