Just looking for people's advice on the following. A few days ago, a catalogue was pushed through the door. A note was included, instructing me to leave the catalogue outside the door on a specific date if I didn't want it. To be quite honest, this irritated me and I immediately chucked it in the bin. Collector called around yesterday evening, banged on door and rang bell several times. I opened the door and explained my view (ie the perils of depositing unsolicited mail through people's mailboxes). The seller berated me, called me ignorant and told me that he would now have to pay for this out of his own money. I'm not really good at confrontation and was left a little bit rattled by the whole thing! Would this be a common scenario or am I being wholly unreasonable?
 
Lads -- don't just chuck them in the bin -- unless it's a recyling bin -- but you are right Brendan -- you should complain to the catlogue company -- I think that most of those catlogues have a reps code, phone # or some other form of identifcation
 
The purpose of a mailbox or mail slot in door is for depositing letters/small parcels for the occupants. Anything that it "mailed" thru the slot automatically belongs to the occupant. If people are putting things thru the slot that are not mail for the occupant, then they are making inappropriate use of the slot, do so at their own risk and should not expect to get the thing back.

I always put these things in the recycle bin and if anyone calls, I tell them where to go and not to ever deliver these things again. Another tip is if there is a freepost mail return envelope included, always post it back with nothing inside - that way you are costing these people money as payback for your inconvenience.
 
I chuck them in the bin and if someone calls looking for them I don't bother even having a discussion with them - waste of time and effort - just say "no thanks" and close the door. Have left more than one puzzled collector on the door wondering about their catalogue which they never got to discuss or ask me for
 
Hmm, so cold calling sales reps get the same treatment. At least the catalogue people left a note.

Some poor bugger trying to make a living and you just dismiss them!

a simple no thanks not today , and hand it back would be abit more civilised.

People can be so rude nowadays
 



I absolutely agree with you, some people have little to complain about.
 
Some people consider unsolicited mail/flyers the height of rudeness. I'd chuck it in the recycler too and tell the person to bugger off if they started hassling me about it!
 
Why not give it back to them when they come to collect it and at the same time tell them next time you'll bin it?
 
I agree and I had a standup row with a guy one day coming back for his brochure when I was living in my parents house.
I think we had thrown it away or else it was put somewhere but either way I didn't know where it was.

I seen the guy came knocking so I didn't answer, next think I see him peering in the living room window at me and then he start banging on the window when he saw me there watching TV.

Needless to say he was sorry!

I agree though, they should knock and see if people want them and get them to sign for them or something, then people will have the choice whether to take them or not.

Whatever about him trying to earn a living but he had no right to be looking in my living room window!
 

I wasn't given the option to say 'no thanks, not today'. It was on the floor in my hallway when I got home. I was expected to keep this in a safe place for a fortnight and return it in impeccable condition when the seller called for it. I have a problem with cold-callers anyway. I'm female and live alone so tend to go on 'red-alert' when the door-bell rings. I don't have much sympathy for 'some poor bugger' who tries to make their living by throwing rubbish through my door and then demanding it back.
 
Put a small sign on the door saying "No Unsolicited Mail" next to the beware of dog sign and say that unsolicited mail will be binned.
You wont stop all of it, but the guy that gets the money deducted from his wages will think twice next time.
