We are currently renovating a property and are putting down 12 mm laminate flooring through out. The white underlay is provided for free but the guy in the shop is pushing that roll of gold underlay which works out at 3e a sq yard. Just wondering if it's necessary or what the advantages are? We have 2 toddlers and baby on the way so this flooring is not for the long term, we will hope to replace it when things get a bit quieter around the place!

Should add that it is a new concrete floor. Aware that if we go with white underlay that we will have to put down a moisture proof barrier. Also, it is a bungalow so soundproof not necessary....

The gold underlay called boardwalk...definatelty worth it in my opinion. I put it under 12mm laminate on a concrete floor also...I think it was 90euro for the roll. I was about a sq metre short with the one roll and did not want to purchase another roll just for this small area so just put the white underlay here (inconspicious area which won't be walked on under the stairs)...The difference is huge!...So much quieter...so much less "bounce"...generally feels so much better underfoot...just my experience :)Depends how long you plan on keeping the floor I guess - my laminate has 25 year guarantee and don't plan on pulling it up till I have to!
