Underground house extensions?

i saw a program some months back about a company in england who excavate under your house and dig out a whole new basement the size of the whole footprint of the house ,which would add a whole new floor to your house if building up is not feasable.(1) does anyone know of such companies in ireland which do this procedure ?( 2) is planning required ?(3) costs ?any info would be great ...........regards .....gary.

Planning is required because someone in the public arena (may be Denis O'Brien) has had to apply for retention for his basement.

Well I think you need to be carefull about digging out. When I lived in England someone there was doing something similar and the whole house collapsed.

It can be done only in certain cases. Planning permission is required for that type of development
