I have a mortgage with UB since 2004 and yesterday was the first time I contacted them in connection with the mortgage. I was contacting them to ask them to send out a new direct debit mandate form as i needed to switch the account the mortage was being paid from. Routine request I thought. But because the new account was in my husbands name and not mine, they said I cant change the account. So I have to keep a joint current account open that I wanted to close just to pay them? Is this reasonable or is just because I have a tracker mortgage that they dont want to facilitate me? I think its madness

Are there charges on the current account yearly ? If so, switch it to a UB current account as they offer free banking.

Sounds like absolute rubbish. I have a mortgage with UB and DD has been paid out of my sole account every month. Write in and complain, there is no requirement for DD to be paid out of a joint account.

I think the OP mentioned that the account she was changing to was in her husbands name and she was not jointly on it. I don't think it's unreasonable for a bank to insist that the account that pays the mortgage is in the same name as the person who is liable.

Yes it is unreasonable. It makes no sense!! The Bank have no access to the account from which the mortgage is being paid & they have no right to insist that this account be in joint names. Terms and conditions of any mortgage loan do not include this requirement.
