print off the form - do 2 copies in case you make a mistake.

Fill in all the bits you are sure of (name, dob, NI number etc)

I was on to another fella at USP and he said they'd stopped taking new applicants on Jan 1st because of the approaching deadline, thanks though appreciate info. All the posts have been such a huge help in getting (half!) a handle on the application. I'll go solo so !
 
I was not in employment directly before leaving the UK. I was in college for the year before i left. I was in employment before this and immediately upon returning to ireland until the present day. I was assessed as having to pay class 3 contributions even after appealing. Has anyone on this thread been in my situation successfully appealed this?

I feel that I am being penalised just because of that one year i was not in employment. I wonder should I just suck it up and apply for a loan to pay class 3 contributions. I understand it's still a great deal but at the same time feel that just because of the stipulation that I was not in employment directly before I left the UK is a bit harsh expecially since I worked before and after.

I know time is limited to try and appeal again so don't want to be wasting time. Is there anyone on here who has been in my situation and successfully appealed on the grounds that they have been in employment most of their working lives?

I was just talking to HM Revenue and Customs, it was going well, getting the answers I needed, then I got cut off. This after being in the queue for more than 30 minutes.

The guy was telling me about how to pay. So, maybe someone on here who's already paid can confirm for me. Pay into this account using the reference in format NZ123456BICSURNAME to:

account number (IBAN) - GB49 BARC 2020 4830 9447 93
Business Identifier Code (BIC) - BARCGB22
account name - HMRC NIC receipts

Thanks for your reply. I've looked again at the letter they sent me and back account details aren't in it. It just points me to the website, the link I posted above.

That surprises me as from what I understand it's a standard letter; however processes can change.
Again the bank details / payment process differs depending on where you live.
 
This is such a helpful thread thank you to everyone. I followed the process, filled out the NI38 form early last year, got my letter saying class 2 amounts etc and have now paid 10 years of contributions.. When I log in, I noticed my years are listed as being self-employed in my account. I'm not self-employed and when filling out my paperwork I gave details of my employer. Is this normal or should I query it with HMRC?

 
I just noticed this oddity on my NI record. I am credited with 3 full years from age 16 to 20. I was 26 when I moved to the UK and started paying NI. No idea why I have the extra 3 years added but I’m not going to protest.

I think I read somewhere that you had to be allocated an NI number before 2010 in order to qualify for the 3 extra years. Seems crazy that you could benefit from this when you weren't even living in the UK at the time. I am not complaining though. It was a very pleasant to discover that I had 6 years contributions not 3!

Ditto! Hard to believe that we may qualify for a payment from the UK government that requires a fraction of the contribution cost of a teacher's "gold plated" pension in Ireland.
 
I started working in the public sector in Ireland in 2020 at the age of 32, so I will probably never have full contributions in Ireland by the time I retire. A colleague at work mentioned something about transferring existing UK national insurance contributions to cover a shortfall in Irish contributions. Is this possible?
 
I looked into that a few years ago but I was advised to claim the Uk pension instead, at the time I qualified for £45 a week from Uk based on my contributions there. Which was indeed more that the shortfall I had here. And since then I’ve added to my Uk pot considerably.

I am assuming that the same £ contributions can’t be counted twice but that might not be the case…
