Hi, making this enquiry on behalf of a friend.

He has been living and working in Ireland since the early 2000s and along with his brother, they had the UK family home gifted to them 5 years ago by their father, who has recently died. Mother passed away good few years ago before the transfer of the home to the 2 brothers (no other siblings in the family). Value of property now is around £300K and it is owned 50/50 by the 2 brothers so value of each share is £150K. I can see that the threshold for UK Inheritance Tax is £325K so they would each be well under this amount, as there is very little value is in the rest of the father's estate that they will now inherit. His brother lives and works in the UK.

Does anyone know if the Irish based brother would have any Inheritance Tax liability even though it seems from my understanding that he would not have any to pay?

Any help is much appreciated.

There is no "threshold for UK Inheritance Tax" in Ireland

The threshold for inheritance from parents for an Irish resident taxpayer is € 335,000 full stop - it doesn't matter where the property is, only who bequeathed it

The limit is for all inheritances or gifts received from your parents since Dec 1991

There is no inheritance tax levied on the inheritors in the UK but there is an Estate Tax charged on the estate of the deceased
