UK Full Contribution Pension moved to Ireland

Hi folks

I'm making an enquiry for my brother who lived his whole life in UK and is turning 65.
He has a full 35 years of Contributions made in the UK however moved to Ireland when he was 60 and has no work in Ireland apart from the odd bit of temp work so has only paid maybe 8 stamps a year in Ireland (trying to get a full time job in Ireland at 60 isn't easy)

The retirement age in UK is 65 and Ireland is 66

Is he entitled to a Contributory based pension in Ireland which will draw down on his UK stamps/contributions??
Or will it be a Non-contributory based pension

If its non-contributory - would he be better just drawing the UK pension then and at least then its contributory based ??

Can he get the pension at 65 or 66 ??

He is entitled to a UK pension.
He is most probably not entitled to a full Irish pension - he may get a reduced Irish pension based on his UK and Irish contribution but as his Irish contributions are so small, this is not likely to be much.

As he is living in Ireland, EU rules mean he has to apply for the pensions through the Irish office in Sligo. He should apply 6 months in advance of reaching 66. His UK pension will be paid from his UK retirement date and will be backdated to this if and when it is paid - at least that's my experience

Thanks so much for your reply

Might be a dumb question - so will he get a 'contributory' or a 'non contributory' pension from Sligo ??

I understand he has not made enough Irish contributions to quality for Contributory Irish pension, however do his UK contributions count to ensure he gets the 'contributory' while resident here in Ireland ?

The EU rules are that he will get an Irish non-contributory pension equal to the greater of
1) whatever his Irish non-contributory pension would be based on his social insurance payments in Ireland alone
2) a proportion of the pension based on his full insurance contributions made in Ireland and the UK - the proportion would be Irish contributions/Total contributions

The Dept of Social Welfare has information on how much pension you are entitled to based on your contributions
