Two cars on policy

I am down as the policy holder on our car insurance policy with my wife as the named driver.

We are both driving about three years; both of us have had our full licences for a year or so (age 33 - late starter). No claims in the three years.

Our car is a 1.6 Focus; am looking to buy a Saab 900 2L aero (pre-GM 1990). We pay about €450 for the focus, but I'm being quoted between €900-1000 to add the Saab (which is only worth about €3,000 anyway). That would be with my wife as policy holder on the focus and me being named; vice versa on the saab.

Do those quotes sound high? I have always wanted a classic saab, but if the insurance is that high it would be a non runner.

Thanks.

You cant insure more than one car on a policy unless you have garage insurance. You would need to take out a new policy for the Saab.

I would have expected to pay €600-€700 for insurance. You are loaded because the engine is 2000cc, the value is really not important. Doing a quick check on 123.ie should ease the pain a little, as I found myself in similar circumstances last year with an old mx5 cabriolet.

No, that's exactly what they are trying to do to you - you are setting yourselves up for a right royal shafting by the insurer / broker. Here is what you do

1) Transfer your existing policy to the Saab incl 3 years NCB with you as policy-holder and wife as named driver

2) Have your wife apply for new comprehensive policy on the Focus, using 3 years NCB as named driver on your original policy when applying, if necessary to one of the outfits specialising in insurance for women

3) Once your wife secures insurance, down-grade the Saab insurance to 3rd part F&T only as the comprehensive portion of the policy costs very little any
way

You will save money and the nasty broker / insurance company will be poorer.

It's coming out as over €1K for the saab on 123.ie, even with my wife as a named driver. I think my lack of driving experience + the fact that it's the turbo version + the age of the car is all inflating the price.

Your policy will be loaded to reflect new change??

Why are you buying a 1990 saab 900 out of interest?

Ring FBD they were the cheapest for me.

I always seem to better on the phone direct to insurance co.s than the net.

Set aside a lunch hour in work and ring a few.

There are lots of reasons i love saabs and the 900 in particular, but it's pretty boring to read, so I'll skip it unless you really want to know.

I got good advice from boards that if i join a classic car club I should be able to to get cheaper insurance through one of the deals they have with insurers. I have yet to set it up, but I'll post again when i get a quote.

Last time I looked into this, the classic car had to be your second car, not your main car.
