TV Screen gone black - tube gone?

My tv screen went completely black the other evening. Sound okay. Someone told me this is the tube? And its not worth replacing - better off buying new television? Tv about 4 years old. Also if I do scrap it will the local dump accept it?
Any advice appreciated.

if you buy a new tv the shop will take the old one off you as you have to pay the extra 10 or 15 quid in the cost now for recycling.

If you do end up buying a new TV then you can bring the old one back for recycling. However I presume that this only applies on a like for like basis (e.g. a CRT for a CRT or an LCD/plasma for an LCD/plasma - not sure if they'll take back a CRT if you are buying an LCD/plasma?)?

Thanks for that I will enquire when pricing tv's. Thankfully I had a spare one so no mad rush.
