My mum will shortly be 66 and she needs to apply for the old age pension. Only problem is we cannot locate a PPS for her. All we can find is basically Dad's number with a W at the end. I understand that the DSP will not accept this. I believe the the DSP did issue her a number many years ago but we have no record of it? How would we go about locating it?

Also My mum does not have any photo ID or bills in her name. Will this be a problem?

Have you asked the DSP for the number? If you submitted a request under the DATA Protection act they would have to supply any information they have on her, you shouldn't have to go to that much trouble, but if they insist, make the inquiry.

Contact Client Identity Services in DSP for information on PPSNs and how to apply for one if none exists. The Department no longer issue "level W" PPSNs, but they remain valid numbers until they are replaced.

The PPSN with the W is her number. The DSP will accept it, as will any other State body.

The DSP have voided the old wife numbers since around 2002.
Not in Herself's experience. They got round to her in September 2010 and changed her number. It's not as if she had been flying under the radar: she was in continuous employment for many years including the period between 2002 and 2010.

I infer that OP's mother might not have been in employment, and her file might have been dormant.

In any event, I'd be confident that if there is a new number, DSP should be able to find it using the old number as a starting point.
