Trying to exchange a cookery book in Dunnes Stores.

Hi,

I recently bought a cookery book in Dunnes Stores and when I got it home and looked through it properly, it wasn't as good as I thought.

I tried bringing it back and asking for either a refund or credit note and was refused on the basis it had something to do with copyright and they don't give refund/exchange/credit note on cookery books.

Does this sound right?

Hi,
You dont have any legal rights to excahnge any product, unless it is defective, so Dunnes are within their rights to do this.
The law ia no different for cookery books, or books in general, or any other product.

Their policy may have something to do with the fact, that is very easy to buy a cookery book, photocopy a few pages and bring it back.
 
I dont know about copyright issues but they (I think) would be under no obligation to give a refund or credit note just because you thought the book would be better than it was. There was nothing physically wrong with it.....
 
Ok, thats great. I did think that but wasn't absoluely sure. Thanks for the confirmation.
 
Cook a really bad meal, bring it in and tell them the book doesnt work :D

And photocopy the other recipes before you send it back as well......


In all honesty, peoples' idea of entitlements to return goods has gone completely mad...
 
You may well find if you bring it to another branch that they will exchange/refund on it provided you have the receipt. Their return policy is stated on the bottom of their receipts and it does not say anything about books.
 
I didn't know we sold cookery books...was it a big branch like Henry Street? I'd give returning it in another store a shot. The policy printed on the receipts is a bit out of date-fundamentally correct but does not state concession brands (there are quite a few) can only be returned in the flagships they were bought in, ie. only 3 stores, all of which are in Dublin.
 
I think whoever served you in Dunnes was just being contrary..
I returned a cookery book to my local book center and it was no problem.
 
Thanks. I've thrown the receipt out now anyway.

I didn't think I had rights when bringing it back but was just chancing my arm as the book was actually pretty useless after I looked at it in more detail.

It was the Blanchardstown store.
