TRS after marriage

Hi All,

My wife bought an apartment in 2006 and has been receiving TRS but this has just decreased to the lower threshold of €3000 from the previous threshold of €10000. We got married last year and are wondering if I can apply my first time buyers status to the mortgage to get more TRS i.e. a limit of €6000?

We saw some online information that seemed to support this but we emailed the Revenue and they have not given us an exact answer or details of how we would go about applying for this.

Also, would this be a wise move for us because we would like to buy a house in a year or two and hopefully rent out the apartment she bought (there is negative equity so doesn't really make sense to us to sell it at such a loss).

Many Thanks

Yes you should be allowed additional TRS. I was in the same boat where I had a house and when we got married my wife was allowed additional relief.

Wouldn't make a difference if you chose to move in the future as you would have lost your FTB status technically. So you may as well start claiming now.

Obviously if you rent the apartment out you can no longer claim TRS.
